Caring for the birds the world forgot.

Arcadian Avian Refuge is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and lifelong care of pigeons and other birds often overlooked by traditional wildlife rehabbers. We provide sanctuary for those might not otherwise have a place to go.

Our Story

What began as a small act of compassion has grown into a community-supported sanctuary. Over the years, as we cared for more and more birds, we connected with a network of passionate, experienced pigeon rescuers who graciously shared their knowledge and experience. Their mentorship empowered us and many others to step into rescue work, creating a grassroots community effort that has helped save countless pigeons in the Portland area.

In 2024, with thanks of a generous donation from Cynthia Harris, we built a spacious, safe loft on our property to give our rescued birds the comfort and security they deserve. Inspired to expand our impact, we officially founded Arcadian Avian Refuge as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2025 to continue this work on a broader scale — offering care, advocacy, and refuge for pigeons and empowering others to do the same.

Why Pigeons?

Pigeons are intelligent, affectionate birds who have lived alongside humans for thousands of years. Despite this, they are often excluded from rehabilitation programs simply because they are not native species. At Arcadian Avian Refuge, we believe every bird deserves care and respect, regardless of species.

The reasons a pigeon might need help are many. Some are domestic or “fancy” breeds — bred for appearance or sport qualities — who were lost or abandoned. These birds are ill-equipped to survive in the wild, unable to find reliable food, water, or shelter, and often unable to evade predators. Others are feral pigeons who have fallen ill due to poor nutrition or suffered injuries that impair mobility or vision. Some arrive with deformities like stringfoot, a condition caused by nesting in human debris, or show signs of having been raised around humans, lacking the predator awareness they need to survive on their own.

Whenever a bird has a strong chance of thriving independently, we are committed to rehabilitation and release. But for those who cannot return safely to the wild, we offer lifelong sanctuary in a safe, enriching environment where they can live with dignity and care.

Support Our Work

Your donations help us provide food, medical care, safe housing, and community outreach. Every dollar goes directly to helping the birds in our care and building a future where all birds are valued.

Resources

One person can only do so much — but when we come together with compassion and purpose, our impact can be extraordinary. Arcadian Avian Refuge exists because of the kindness and commitment of everyday people who care. When we are at capacity, we hope we can inspire and empower others to open their hearts to helping these birds.

Bird Sitting

Located in Vancouver, WA, Arcadian Avian Refuge offers bird sitting services from our home. We know how hard it can be to find safe care when traveling or during life changes — so we offer short- and medium-term stays by donation. Please contact to make arrangements.

Our Connection with Arcadia Farm & Nursery

Arcadian Avian Refuge operates from the same home base as Arcadia Refuge Farm & Nursery. Both efforts share the same land — and the same values of care, resilience, and regeneration. While the farm focuses on growing food and cultivating community, the refuge gives forgotten birds a second chance at life.

By sharing space and resources, we’re doing our best to make the biggest positive impact we can — for people, pollinators, and our feathered friends alike.
